‘Through Song We Raise Awareness’: Portsmouth Climate Choir

‘What is a climate choir?’ and ‘Why form one?’ are two questions that Viola Langley has been asked many times. Let her explain.
We are a group of people who love singing and have major concerns about the environment. Some of us had never sung in a choir before but were inspired to sing about the most important issue of issue of all: climate breakdown. Through song we feel connected and able to express our thoughts and feelings. Through song we raise awareness of how we can make a difference and bring hope to people.
The public is bombarded with daily negative news to the point that it makes many of us want to shut down. Portsmouth Climate Choir offers a better solution: join together to build resilience and offer solutions to the negativity.
For example, our latest song, ‘Switch Your Bank’, highlights the harm done by the main banking corporations in the UK and offers alternatives. Another song, ‘Speak Truth to Power’, focuses on the right to protest.
Our wide-ranging repertoire of songs reflect celebrate nature, beauty, compassion, empathy and community. What’ s not to like about that?
Portsmouth Climate Choir is a member of the National Climate Choir movement which operates in 17 cities around the country. Between us all we put on local and national events. Nationally, we have taken part in flashmob actions in the House of Commons and St. Paul’s Cathedral, amongst other locations. A recent local event happened in November 2025, when we assembled in Commercial Road, to highlight COP30, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference.
We practise on the first Monday of each month at The Kings Pub in Albert Road at 7.30 pm. All our songs are on this website so you can learn at your own pace.
You do not need to be a ‘good’ singer. Everybody can sing and everybody cares – so come and join us and find out more. Find us on Portsmouth Climate Choir Facebook page or email langleyviola1@hotmail.com
