Hidden Places Around Portsmouth: Stand Up if You Love Pompey

Local resident, photographer and S&C regular John Callaway returns to give us a glimpse into Portsmouth’s hidden places with his stunning photograph, and this week is one of our favourites.

Stand up if you love Pompey…

…or at least lean gently against something solid.

A day off work so a bit of a wander around The Hard and Spice Island today. Sometimes the best part about photography is just seeing what turns up and trying to link a few images together at the end of the day.

In truth, I had quite a lot of photographs that might have made the cut, but these are just (to my mind at least) ‘pure Pompey’. The narrative was in danger of becoming ‘pubs I have drunk in’, so let’s hear it for the Ship Anson and The Bridge Tavern, but who could resist The Hard Dock Cafe (sadly seemingly closed for ‘development’)?

HMS Warrior never took a shot in anger, but a fine ship nonetheless and Gosport on the horizon.

Don’t be a squinny or a dinlo, mush, just appreciate what a great city Pompey is to live in.
